Sermon of Love (with excerpts from John, Corinthians & Deuteronomy)

מִצְוָה חֲדָשָׁה אֲנִי נֹתֵן לָכֶם אֲשֶׁר תְּאֵהֲבוּ אִשׁ אֶת־אָחִיו כַּאֲשֶׁר אָהַבְתִּי אֶתְכֶם כֵּן גַּם־אַתֶּם אִישׁ אֶת־אָחִיו תֶּאֱהָבוּן׃

אִם־אֲהַבְתֶּם אֹתִי אֶת־מִצְוֹתַי תִּשְׁמֹרוּ׃

 מִי אֲשֶׁר מִצְוֹתַי אִתּוֹ וַיִּשְׁמֹר אֹתָן הוּא אֲשֶׁר אָהַב אֹתִי וְאֹהֲבִי אָהוּב לְאָבִי וַאֲנִי אֹהֲבֵהוּ וְאֵלָיו אֶתְוַדָּע׃

אִם־תִּשְׁמְרוּ אֶת־מִצְוֹתַי תַּעַמְדוּ בְּאַהֲבָתִי כַּאֲשֶׁר שָׁמַרְתִּי גַם־אֲנִי אֶת־מִצְוֹת אָבִי וְעָמַדְתִּי בְּאַהֲבָתוֹ׃ אֶת־אֵלֶּה דִּבַּרְתִּי אֲלֵיכֶם בַּעֲבוּר תִּשְׁכֹּן שִׂמְחָתִי בָּכֶם וְתִהְיֶה שִׂמְחַתְכֶם שְׁלֵמָה׃ הִנֵּה־זֹאת מִצְוָתִי אֲשֶׁר תֶּהֱהָבוּן אִישׁ אֶת־אָחִיו כַּאֲשֶׁר אֲהַבְתִּיכֶם׃ אֵין אַהֲבָה רַבָּה מֵאַהֲבַת הַנּוֹתֵן נַפְשׁוֹ בְּעַד יְדִידָיו׃ וְאַתֶּם אִם־תַּעֲשׂוֹּ אֵת אֲשֶׁר־אֲנִי מְצַוֶּה אֶתְכֶם יְדִידַי אַתֶּם׃

אִם־בִּלְשֹׁנוֹת אֲנָשִׁים וּמַלְאָכִים אֲדַבֵּר וְאֵין־בִּי אַהֲבָה הָיִיתִי כִּנְחשֶׁת הֹמָה אוֹ כְּצִלְצַל תְּרוּעָה׃

 וְאִם תִּהְיֶה־לִּי נְבוּאָה וְאֵדַע כָּל־הַסּוֹדוֹת וְכָל־הַדָּעַת וְאִם תִּהְיֶה־לִּי אֱמוּנָה רַבָּה עַד לְהַעְתִּיק הָרִים מִמְּקוֹמָם וְאֵין־בִּי הָאַהֲבָה הָיִיתִי כְּאָיִן׃

 וְאִם־אֲחַלֵּק אֶת־כָּל־הוֹנִי וְאִם־אֶתֵּן אֶת־גּוּפִי לִשְׂרֵפָה וְאֵין־בִּי הָאַהֲבָה כָּל־זֹאת לֹא תוֹעִילֵנִי׃

 הָאַהֲבָה מַאֲרֶכֶת־אַף וְעֹשָׂה חָסֶד הָאַהֲבָה לֹא תְקַנֵּא הָאַהֲבָה לֹא תִתְפָּאֵר וְלֹא תִתְרוֹמָם׃

 לֹא תַעֲשֶׂה דְּבַר־תִּפְלָה וְלֹא־תְבַקֵּשׁ אֵת אֲשֶׁר־לָהּ וְלֹא תִתְמַרְמַר וְלֹא תַחֲשֹׁב הָרָעָה׃

 לֹא תִשְׂמַח בָּעַוְלָה כִּי עִם־הָאֱמֶת תִּשְׂמָח׃

 אֶת־כֹּל תִּשָּׂא אֶת־כֹּל תַּאֲמִין אֶת־כֹּל תְּקַוֶּה וְאֶת־כֹּל תִּסְבֹּל׃

 הָאַהֲבָה לֹא־תִבֹּל לְעוֹלָם אֲבָל הַנְּבוּאוֹת תִּבָּטַלְנָה וְהַלְּשֹׁנוֹת תִּכְלֶינָה וְהַדַּעַת תִּבָּטֵל׃

יְדִידַי נֶאֱהַב־נָא אִישׁ אֶת־רֵעֵהוּ כִּי הָאַהֲבָה מֵאֱלֹהִים הִיא וְכָל־אֲשֶׁר יֶאֱהַב נוֹלָד מֵאֱלֹהִים וְיֹדֵעַ אֵת הָאֱלֹהִים׃ וַאֲשֶׁר אֵינֶנּוּ אֹהֵב לֹא יָדַע אֶת־הָאֱלֹהִים כִּי הָאֱלֹהִים הוּא אַהֲבָה׃ בָּזֹאת נִרְאֲתָה אַהֲבַת הָאֱלֹהִים לָנוּ אֲשֶׁר־שָׁלַח הָאֱלֹהִים אֶת־בְּנוֹ אֶת־יְחִידוֹ לָעוֹלָם לְמַעַן נִחְיֶה עַל־יָדוֹ׃ זֹאת הִיא הָאַהֲבָה לֹא שֶׁאֲנַחְנוּ אָהַבְנוּ אֶת־הָאֱלֹהִים כִּי אִם־הוּא אָהַב אוֹתָנוּ וַיִּשְׁלַח אֶת־בְּנוֹ לְכַפָּרָה עַל־חַטֹּאתֵינוּ׃

וְעַתָּה יִשְׂרָאֵל מָה יְהוָֹה אֱלֹהֶיךָ שֹׁאֵל מֵעִמָּךְ כִּי אִם-לְיִרְאָה אֶת-יְהֹוָה אֱלֹהֶיךָ לָלֶכֶת בְּכָל-דְּרָכָיו וּלְאַהֲבָה אֹתוֹ וְלַעֲבֹד אֶת-יְהוָֹה אֱלֹהֶיךָ בְּכָל-לְבָבְךָ וּבְכָל-נַפְשֶׁךָ:

לִשְׁמֹר אֶת-מִצְוֹת יְהוָֹה וְאֶת-חֻקֹּתָיו אֲשֶׁר אָנֹכִי מְצַוְּךָ הַיּוֹם לְטוֹב לָךְ:

הֵן לַיהוָֹה אֱלֹהֶיךָ הַשָּׁמַיִם וּשְׁמֵי הַשָּׁמָיִם הָאָרֶץ וְכָל-אֲשֶׁר-בָּהּ:

רַק בַּאֲבֹתֶיךָ חָשַׁק יְהוָֹה לְאַהֲבָה אוֹתָם וַיִּבְחַר בְּזַרְעָם אַחֲרֵיהֶם בָּכֶם מִכָּל-הָעַמִּים כַּיּוֹם הַזֶּה:

וּמַלְתֶּם אֵת עָרְלַת לְבַבְכֶם וְעָרְפְּכֶם לֹא תַקְשׁוּ עוֹד:

כִּי יְהוָֹה אֱלֹהֵיכֶם הוּא אֱלֹהֵי הָאֱלֹהִים וַאֲדֹנֵי הָאֲדֹנִים הָאֵל הַגָּדֹל הַגִּבֹּר וְהַנּוֹרָא אֲשֶׁר לֹא-יִשָּׂא פָנִים וְלֹא יִקַּח שֹׁחַד:

עֹשֶׂה מִשְׁפַּט יָתוֹם וְאַלְמָנָה וְאֹהֵב גֵּר לָתֶת לוֹ לֶחֶם וְשִׂמְלָה:

וַאֲהַבְתֶּם אֶת-הַגֵּר כִּי-גֵרִים הֱיִיתֶם בְּאֶרֶץ מִצְרָיִם:

אֶת-יְהוָֹה אֱלֹהֶיךָ תִּירָא אֹתוֹ תַעֲבֹד וּבוֹ תִדְבָּק וּבִשְׁמוֹ תִּשָּׁבֵעַ:

הוּא תְהִלָּתְךָ וְהוּא אֱלֹהֶיךָ אֲשֶׁר-עָשָׂה אִתְּךָ אֶת-הַגְּדֹלֹת וְאֶת-הַנּוֹרָאֹת הָאֵלֶּה אֲשֶׁר רָאוּ עֵינֶיךָ:

בְּשִׁבְעִים נֶפֶשׁ יָרְדוּ אֲבֹתֶיךָ מִצְרָיְמָה וְעַתָּה שָׂמְךָ יְהוָֹה אֱלֹהֶיךָ כְּכוֹכְבֵי הַשָּׁמַיִם לָרֹב:

וְאָהַבְתָּ אֵת יְהוָֹה אֱלֹהֶיךָ וְשָׁמַרְתָּ מִשְׁמַרְתּוֹ וְחֻקֹּתָיו וּמִשְׁפָּטָיו וּמִצְוֹתָיו כָּל-הַיָּמִים:

וּשְׁמַרְתֶּם אֶת-כָּל-הַמִּצְוָה אֲשֶׁר אָנֹכִי מְצַוְּךָ הַיּוֹם לְמַעַן תֶּחֶזְקוּ וּבָאתֶם וִירִשְׁתֶּם אֶת-הָאָרֶץ אֲשֶׁר אַתֶּם עֹבְרִים שָׁמָּה לְרִשְׁתָּהּ:

וּלְמַעַן תַּאֲרִיכוּ יָמִים עַל-הָאֲדָמָה אֲשֶׁר נִשְׁבַּע יְהוָֹה לַאֲבֹתֵיכֶם לָתֵת לָהֶם וּלְזַרְעָם אֶרֶץ זָבַת חָלָב וּדְבָשׁ:

יהי רצון מלפניך ה' אלהינו ואלהי אבותי, שתטע אהבתך ויראתך בלבי ובלב כל ישראל עמך, ליראה את שמך הגדול הגבור והנורא בכל לבבנו ובכל נפשנו. יראת הרוממות של אין סוף, ברוך ויתעלה שמך, כי גדול אתה ונורא שמך. אמן, סלה.

A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another.

If a man love me, he will keep my words:

He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me: and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him.

If ye keep my commandments, ye shall abide in my love; even as I have kept my Father's commandments, and abide in his love.

These things have I spoken unto you, that my joy might remain in you, and that your joy might be full.

This is my commandment, That ye love one another, as I have loved you.

Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.

Ye are my friends, if ye do whatsoever I command you.

If I speak in the tongues of men or of angels, but do not have love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing. If I give all I possess to the poor and give over my body to hardship that I may boast, but do not have love, I gain nothing.

Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.

Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away.

Beloved, let us love one another: for love is of God; and every one that loveth is born of God, and knoweth God.

He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love.

In this was manifested the love of God toward us, because that God sent his only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through him.

Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins.

And now, Israel, what doth the LORD thy God require of thee, but to fear the LORD thy God, to walk in all His ways, and to love Him, and to serve the LORD thy God with all thy heart and with all thy soul; to keep for thy good the commandments of the LORD, and His statutes, which I command thee this day? Behold, unto the LORD thy God belongeth the heaven, and the heaven of heavens, the earth, with all that therein is. Only the LORD had a delight in thy fathers to love them, and He chose their seed after them, even you, above all peoples, as it is this day. Circumcise therefore the foreskin of your heart, and be no more stiffnecked. For the LORD your God, He is God of gods, and Lord of lords, the great God, the mighty, and the awful, who regardeth not persons, nor taketh reward. He doth execute justice for the fatherless and widow, and loveth the stranger, in giving him food and raiment. Love ye therefore the stranger; for ye were strangers in the land of Egypt. Thou shalt fear the LORD thy God; Him shalt thou serve; and to Him shalt thou cleave, and by His name shalt thou swear. He is thy glory, and He is thy God, that hath done for thee these great and tremendous things, which thine eyes have seen. Thy fathers went down into Egypt with threescore and ten persons; and now the LORD thy God hath made thee as the stars of heaven for multitude.

Therefore thou shalt love the LORD thy God, and keep His charge, and His statutes, and His ordinances, and His commandments, alway.

Therefore shall ye keep all the commandment which I command thee this day, that ye may be strong, and go in and possess the land, whither ye go over to possess it; and that ye may prolong your days upon the land, which the LORD swore unto your fathers to give unto them and to their seed, a land flowing with milk and honey.

May be it Your will, Lord My God and the God of my forefathers that you may implant your love and revernce in my heart and in hearts of all Israel your people, that we may fear your Great, Mighty and Awesome name with all our hearts and with all our essence. The reverence of the Majesty of Eternal Name, O, Infinite One, blessed and magnified is Your Name, because You are Great and terrible is Your Name, Amen, Selah!
